‘New education methods will transform the way students learn’ @ Education 4.0

‘New education methods will transform the way students learn’ @ Education 4.0

Education is set for massive transformation as technology is ushering in a new era in the field of learning, said T.V. Mohandas Pai, Chairman Aarin Capital. In the new scheme of things the student would be at the core and would decide as well as create her/his own degree at one’s own pace and medium. Mr. Pai, former Infosys CFO, and who is also Chairman, Manipal Global Education Services, explains what Education 4.0 is all about. Excerpts:

What is Education 4.0 and why is it important?

Education 4.0 is putting students at the heart of educational experience and creating individual learning experiences. Education 1.0 was the traditional method of students going to a Gurukul in India. Then came the universities as in Takshila and Nalanda in India.

Then Universities came up in Europe. Then you had the industrial revolution which demanded a large number of people who could be trained. There, student read books, sat down and listened to the teachers. They had a course, they had a curriculum and then they obtained a certificate to earn a livelihood.

In Education 4.0, students can create a degree of their own, are able to do a degree in nuclear science [combining it] with biotechnology, with dance, with music or with fundamental physics or something like that.

The mix and match is available and can be done offline or online. A student can sit at home do a course online and get a degree.

How is it panning out?

It’s already happening in the world. Many students will ask themselves why they need a university degree? Why can’t they do things on their own?

Employers will ask what the value of a university degree is? It is happening but slowly in India because lots of people have a common education system and they still want a degree. We see change all over the world and in next 5-10 years we see acceleration and an increase in people taking such certification.

Will Education 4.0 see reality by 2020?

I think around the world it will pick up by 2020 and in India by 2025. Our problem is the government. Our problem is the UGC. And also remember we are long behind the curve... in America, 70% of people go to college, in Germany 80% and in Japan 88% of people go to college.
How do you enhance the quality of education?

For that we need to see which are the best institutes in the world and what the catalyst is. The best institutes are Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge and they are so good because they decide what they want to do.

They decide on courses, examinations... No Government and no regulator interference. The U.S. and U.K. governments just give money. We need to give full freedom to the top 100 education institutions and in the next five years we will see a change. We also need public funding for research. The government should have a 5,000 crore annual fund for research and all universities should bid for it.

Career in Foreign Languages

Shreeprakash Sharma
Knowledge of language is the doorway to wisdom.                                                                                                                                                       – Roger BaconLanguage is said to be the soul of human being. It is the most natural means of communicating and expressing what we feel and think. There is no gainsaying the fact that with the changing global scenario, especially in the post-transitional period of liberalization, privatization and globalization, the importance of foreign languages has been more increasing. The fast increase in the advent of multinational companies and the rapid rate of the investment by the Indian companies abroad, the knowledge of foreign languages is reckoned as the passport of a host of career opportunities in the country and abroad as well.
Why learn a Foreign Language?Learning foreign languages not only enriches our life style and enhances cultural ethos but also provides more career alternatives and better job experiences. We also succeed in having different perspectives and visions of life and the world around us. Our cognitive quality and life skills get very naturally improved. Getting a job at international level also helps us have a lucrative income, global perspective and international identity. We learn the art of cultural tolerance and religious adjustment with the people from different backgrounds. The horizon of our knowledge of art, literature, music, cinema, cult and cuisine gets broadened. There is no escape that learning of foreign languages in the open economy of today’s global used provides a good career.
As per an international survey report, there would be requirement of more than 1.5 million of foreign language experts in the coming two decades, especially when the multinational companies are fast mushrooming across the nations in the world. The foreign language professionals are expected to get recruited in various BPO, IT and KPO in India. These professionals may also be recruited in the companies outsourced to India from the European countries.
As per the latest trend of global job markets and corporate culture the demand for the professionals specialized in the following foreign languages may prove to be pretty bright and lucrative-French, Russian, German, Chinese, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish.
Necessary EligibilitiesFor getting the degree in a foreign language the aspirants must have passed the plus 2 examination from a recognized board. The duration of the bachelor’s degree course usually is of three years. After the degree in foreign language the interested candidates can join the 2-year – Postgraduate course and thereafter Ph.D.
Package and PerksMuch like other jobs, foreign language too provides more of the compensation when a candidate is more experienced. However, in the beginning a candidate is offered not less than Rs. 30,000 to 40,000 per month of the salary. Employments in foreign embassies and business consulates could also fetch the same amount of pay package but in case of jobs of interpretation and translation the same professionals may get considerably very high pay package. A skilled interpreter is offered between Rs. 1000 per hour to Rs. 25,000 a day. Translators may charge anywhere between Re 1 per word to Rs.10 per word. All these remunerations depend upon the nature of language and economic background of the hirers and the organizations.
ScholarshipsJawaharlal Nehru University provides scholarship to the students of the economically weaker students which is also called as ‘Earn as you learn’ via a number of part-time jobs under the aegis of the University Grant Commission. It also offers scholarships. Embassies of various countries too offer scholarship.
Where to learn Foreign LanguagesMany of the education institutes have the foreign language in their syllabi so the students there start learning it from very early and that too without any special effort and at extra charge. But majority of students are also there who take step to study foreign languages only after higher secondary to further go for the graduation and post graduation courses as well as Ph.D in them. However, the diploma and certificate courses are also offered by various institutes in less time period and at lesser costs.

Job ProspectsThe learning of a foreign language opens the doors of a host of job opportunities in the present globalized economies of the world. It is not only the matter of having an ace up your sleeve and pride for the learners to possess the knowledge of a foreign language but it also equips an aspirant to better face the market of today’s cut-throat-competition. Academic degrees and proficiency of a foreign language prove to be an entry ticket to the pools of jobs in the segments of tourism, education, diplomatic services, interpretation, translation, international trade and relation, entertainment, public relations, mass media and journalism, publishing, communication, embassies, consulates and various others which are likely to unfold their wings of opportunities in the years to come. Multinational companies having their well-planned network across the nations in the world also recruit the foreign language experts in the various positions. Moreover, the internet revolution has also considerably helped increase the demand of foreign language professionals in the positions of online content writer, technical translator and interpreter. The various international organizations, including the important agencies of the United Nations Organization (UNO), which require the foreign language experts in large number, are Food Agriculture Organization, Ministry of External Affairs, and Reserve Bank of India.
However, some of the specialized fields of jobs for the professionals of foreign languages are in the areas of -linguistics, interpretation, translation and teaching.
How much does one need to spend? In so far as the fees for the courses in foreign languages are concerned they vary from university to university and from institute to institute. However, the course fees in JNU and Delhi University are reasonably lower than other universities and institutes. The difference in the fees structure for these courses depend on the language and the number of students opting a particular foreign language. However, foreign languages like Korean, Japanese and Chinese are reckoned as fairly tough and their institutes are also fewer, so they are available at comparatively higher cost whereas Arabic and Persian are commonly available at all universities in the country and so these courses are offered at relatively lower costs.
Scholarship and Financing
In the wake of the high course fees for the study of the foreign languages there are various provisions of scholarships and funding by the universities and the government. In this regard, Max Mueller Bhavan in India has a very attractive scheme which offers two scholarships to the two best students of advanced level learning of foreign languages. Similarly, Jawaharlal Nehru University has a very marvellous exchange programme under which students are offered options to study in foreign universities during their regular study at JNU and vice versa. Besides, University of Delhi too has provision of a merit scholarship. However, the foreign governments like those of Korea and Japan have their own programmes under which they provide scholarship to the students who opt for the study of their respective languages.
Foreign Languages – Career and Job opportunitiesIn the present scenario of market economy, learning a foreign language may be a passion for a linguist but it is not the full stop. The skills of foreign languages provide much-needed job opportunities in today’s fast-moving world. The increasing demand of the foreign language experts in the government, businesses and various entrepreneurial organizations has considerably attracted the youths of the 21st century generation-
The Foreign ServicesIn the present open, global and politically-sensitive scenario of the world economy all the countries have embassies, business consulates in the countries across the world. These political organizations take care of the interest of their parent countries and so get valuable help in managing and boosting international trade as well as relations. The governments of the countries require foreign language speakers who will require to live abroad for the following assignments –
*Listening to foreign citizens, government and various other dignitaries,
*Reading, studying, translating and replying of intelligence findings and investigative reports in foreign languages.
*Liaising with the various departments in various countries.
*Conducting research activities in various foreign languages.

*Frisking the passengers at the national and international airports, places of historical importance.
International Institutes and Organizations
Many of the UNO’s agencies like World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and other international organizations like the Red Cross Society, Amnesty International and various others require foreign language experts to perform various assignments which are sine qua non of the management and administration. Besides English, other languages which are in more demand in these international bodies are French, Spanish, German and Arabic.
Tourism and Hospitality Industries
In the present world scenario tourism has grown to be a very big business and nations with large inflow of tourists do always need foreign language experts who can cater to the lingual needs of the foreign guests. Besides, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, multiplex cinema halls and amusement parks do need the experts of various foreign languages to deal with the foreign visitors. The entrepreneurs establish companies abroad and for this purpose they recruit the foreign language experts to meet the needs of the local or host country. There is no denying the fact that the success of these international companies depends much upon the lingual skill of the people working at various outlets for providing quality customer services.
Translation and InterpretationIn the global scenario the modus operandi of communication and knowledge-gaining has undergone drastic changes. We need linguists to translate the magnum opus of the renowned writers in a host of languages both for the commerce and welfare purpose. The translated versions of books of the authors considerably help them increase the sales very surprisingly and thus the profit goes up. In context with the maintenance of foreign and diplomatic relationship the government officials and heads of the nations make visit to the various countries and for the better communication they require the interpreters in foreign languages. The profession of interpretation is not only lucrative but also of very high limelight. The interpreters visit with the celebrities and policy makers of the governments of the various nations. So, this segment has high employment potential.
TeachingFor professionals specializing in the foreign languages are never short of an employment. Teaching is not only a decent job but also a platform to learn many more languages through consistent practice. Schools are appointing foreign language teachers for the purpose of providing foreign language education to the students. Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangthan offers German education in its schools. Universities and colleges do recruit the experts of the various foreign languages as regular faculty members.
Unlike other segments of jobs the foreign language provides the following job options to an interested candidate –
*Foreign language trainer,
*Diplomatic Service Professionals,
*Research Associate
*Translator for various companies and government organizations
*Freelance writer
*Translator
*Interpreter

International Literacy Day 8TH Sept

International Literacy Day

Literacy in a digital world

This year, International Literacy Day (8 September) will be celebrated across the world under the theme of ‘Literacy in a digital world’. On 8 September, 2017 a global event will be organized at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris, with the overall aim to look at what kind of literacy skills people need to navigate increasingly digitally-mediated societies, and to explore effective literacy policies and programmes that can leverage the opportunities that the digital world provides.
The 2017 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes awards ceremony will also take place to recognize and reward excellent literacy practices from around the world in connection with this year’s theme and as a key target in Sustainable Development Goal 4.
At record speed, digital technologies are fundamentally changing the way people live, work, learn and socialise everywhere. They are giving new possibilities to people to improve all areas of their lives including access to information; knowledge management; networking; social services; industrial production, and mode of work. However, those who lack access to digital technologies and the knowledge, skills and competencies required to navigate them, can end up marginalised in increasingly digitally driven societies. Literacy is one such essential skill.
Just as knowledge, skills and competencies evolve in the digital world, so does what it means to be literate. In order to close the literacy skills gap and reduce inequalities, this year’s International Literacy Day will highlight the challenges and opportunities in promoting literacy in the digital world, a world where, despite progress, at least 750 million adults and 264 million out-of-school children still lack basic literacy skills.
International Literacy Day is celebrated annually worldwide and brings together governments, multi- and bilateral organizations, NGOs, private sectors, communities, teachers, learners and experts in the field. It is an occasion to mark achievements and reflect on ways to counter remaining challenges for the promotion of literacy as an integral part of lifelong learning within and beyond the 2030 Education Agenda.

NCERT books online soon

NCERT books online soon

You will soon be able to order NCERT books online just like you do at Flipkart or Amazon with the government launching a portal for placing orders this month itself.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed a portal that will allow schools across the country to place textbook orders directly with it online to ensure they are available in time to students for next year.

The move will help parents save money, which is usually spent on sourcing books from private publishers, often on account of the non-availability of NCERT books. There have been several complaints in the past about the non-availability of the books and schools end up recommending those by private publishers.

“The portal will be launched this month itself and schools as well as individuals will be able to place orders for books online and it will be delivered to them,” said a senior HRD official.

Through this portal, schools and individuals will be able to track the status of their consignments online too as it will indicate the delivery date. Currently, NCERT prints books and they are delivered through authorised vendors across the country. Sources said approximately 42.5 million books are used by CBSE-affiliated schools.

Schools will not be required to make the payment immediately but individuals will be allowed to make the payment and books will be posted to them.

“Schools and those who place the order will also be able to track the movement of books, right from placing an order to the delivery. We are hoping that schools will give us the estimate of the number of books that are required for next year so that they are available much before time,” said a senior ministry official.

Sources said that the NCERT is also in talks with Flipkart and Amazon to host their books and deliver them too.

Time Management Tips

Time Management Tips

New academic session has started. You must have studied that "slow and steady wins the race". The same applies here too. Steady study plan is much much better and effective than the last month study of 12 hours. You have a complete year and a number of activities to perform. Proper time management skill is the key demand of the hour. We provide you seven effective time management tips to prepare you for any battle that comes in your way ...be it semester exams, formative test, olympiads or any other competitive exams.

1. Use the weekly planner: Organize your study on a weekly basis. Plan your weekly schedule every Sunday evening and adjust it daily.

2. Book the firm activities first: Block off class time, work time, and any other pre-determined weekly activities. Also schedule the essentials such as sleep, eating, and relaxation (fun and exercise).

3. Schedule short study sessions before and after lectures: Set aside 20 minutes each to preview the textbook before the lecture and to quickly check your notes after the lecture. This will save hours of study time later on.

4. Avoid marathon study sessions: Break down your study sessions into one-hour segments with 50 minutes of study and 10-minute breaks. Alternate subjects if you have scheduled consecutive hours.

5. Use a timer: A countdown timer is a great tool to help you concentrate for intensive study and to trim down your non-productive hours.

6. Arrange peak hours for core study: In time, you will learn your best study hours of the day. Use them for core study activities that require high concentration, such as reviewing lecture notes and reading the textbook.

7. Allow flexibility: Leave room for the unexpected and plan for the unplanned. Set aside open time on your planner for this.

Unlock The Brain Power and Retain 90% of What You Learn

Unlock The Brain Power and Retain 90% of What You Learn

Have you ever wondered why you always forget what you learn in your School lecture? Why you don’t remember the formula in an exam, you learned last night? There is only one reason for it, our Brain can retain only 10 % of what it reads, but it has the capacity to learn up to 90% of what we experience. So, what is the right way of study to retain 90% of it? The answer to all your questions is learning pyramid. Almost all of us waste 90% of our time, resources and learning time, because we don’t understand a simple concept called the Learning Pyramid. The Learning Pyramid was developed way back in the 1960s by the NTL Institute in Bethel, Maine. Here in this blog we will explain you how to Unlock Brain Power and Retain 90% of What You Learn.

To summarize the numbers (which sometimes get cited differently) learners retains approximately:
1. 90% of what they learn when they teach someone else/use immediately.
2. 75% of what they learn when they practice what they learned.
3. 50% of what they learn when engaged in a group discussion.
4. 30% of what they learn when they see a demonstration.
5. 20% of what they learn from audio-visual.
6. 10% of what they learn when they’ve learned from reading.

So why do you retain 90% when you teach someone else or when you implement it immediately?
When you try to teach others or implement it, you make mistakes and your brain tries to rectify them by increasing the concentration power. So, it learns to correct the errors and understand the topic deeply. Hence, you will gain 90% of that part with all the possible doubts cleared in your head.

75% When practicing what you learned
When you try to solve problems or start practicing the topic learned. You create an impression of that topic with images in your brain. When the same topic is practiced again and again brains with different problems related with it. Brain creates an image in it and retain 75% of it.

50% When you start group discussion about a topic
