Martyrs' Day (India)

In India, there are six days declared as Martyrs' Day (at national level also known as Sarvodaya day). They are named in honour of those who are recognised as martyrs for the nation.

30 January is the date observed in the national level. The date was chosen as it marks the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1948, by Nathuram Godse. On Martyr's Day the president, the vice president, the prime minister, the defence minister, and the three Service Chiefs gather at the samadhi at Raj Ghat memorial and lay wreaths decorated with multi-colour flowers. The armed forces personnel blow bugles sounding the Last Post. The inter-services contingent reverse arms as a mark of respect. A two-minute silence in memory of Indian martyrs is observed throughout the country at 11 am. Participants hold all-religion prayers and sing tributes.

23 March

The anniversary of the deaths of Bhagat SinghSukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru on 23 March 1931, in Lahore (Pakistan), is declared to be Martyr's Day

19 May

The Bengali Language Movement of Barak Valley in the state of Assam was a protest against the decision of the Government of Assam to make Assamese the only official language of the state even though a significant proportion of population were Bengali people. In the Barak Valley, the Sylheti-speaking Bengali population constitute the majority of the population. The main incident, in which 15 people were killed by state police, took place on 19 May 1961 at Silchar railway station. 19 May is now designated Bhasha Shahid Divas ("Language Martyrs Day")

21 October

21 October is Police Martyrs' Day (or Police Commemoration Day), observed by police departments nationwide. On this date in 1959, a Central Reserve Police Force patrol at the Indo-Tibetan border in Ladakh was ambushed by Chinese forces, as part of the ongoing Sino-Indian border dispute

17 November

Odisha observes 17 November, the death anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai (1865–1928), the "Lion of Punjab", a leader in the Indian fight for freedom from the British Raj.

19 November

The birthday of Rani Lakshmibai, 19 November 1828, queen of the Maratha-ruled princely state of Jhansi, is observed as Martyrs' Day in the region, and honours those who gave their lives in the rebellion of 1857, of which she was a leading figure.

World Cancer Day History

World Cancer Day is a global observance that helps raise people’s awareness of cancer and how to prevent, detect, or treat it.

World Cancer Day aims to save lives by raising awareness and educating the population about cancer. The day also serves to pressure governments and individuals to take action in order to prevent, treat, and control cancer. Cancer is a heterogeneous group of diseases that result from abnormal cell growth and have the potential to spread to other parts of the body.

On February 4, 2000, World Cancer Day was officially established by the Paris Charter at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris. The Paris Charter aimed to promote research for a cure and other preventative measures. It also sought services for patients and support from the global community.

World Cancer Day theme: I Am And I Will

This World Cancer Day, we recognise that our commitment to act will lead to powerful progress in reducing the global impact of cancer. So, this 4 February whoever you are, your actions - big and small - will make lasting, positive change. We need your commitment to create a cancer-free world.

This World Cancer Day, who are you and what will you do?

A 3-year campaign for impact

World Cancer Day is a campaign built to resonate, inspire change and mobilise action long after the day has passed.

A multi-year campaign offers a chance to create long-lasting impact by increasing public-facing exposure and engagement, more opportunities to build global awareness and impact-driven action.

2021: Together, all our actions matter

2021 – the ultimate year of the ‘I Am and I Will’ campaign – shows us that our actions have an impact on everyone around us, within our neighbourhoods, communities and cities. And that more than ever, our actions are also being felt across borders and oceans. This year is a reminder of the enduring power of cooperation and collective action. When we choose to come together, we can achieve what we all wish for: a healthier, brighter world without cancer. Together, all of our actions matter. This World Cancer Day, who are you and what will you do?

NEET 2021 to have more internal choices, no syllabus cut: Education Ministry

Not only the number of attempts for JEE Main have been doubled but also there have been internal choices. The same is expected for NEET as well. For NEET, it was reported that the NTA had written to the Ministry of Health and asked if the same can be conducted twice. In line with the JEE Main, the medical entrance exam — NEET 2021 would have more internal choice. This has been done to ensure that the students who have prepared on the basis of the reduced syllabus — as prescribed by most boards including CBSE — are not at a disadvantage. However, there will not be any syllabus cut for the NEET 2021.

Ever since Education Minister Ramesh Pokhryal Nishnak virtually replied to a Kendriya Vidyalaya student on Monday, there has been a buzz about the NEET syllabus being reduced. However, the minister had instead hinted at a change in pattern. “As the curriculum (for board exams) was cut by 30 per cent due to Covid-19, therefore in the upcoming competitive examinations like JEE and NEET this year the candidates will have more options to answer the questions,” he had said. The exact pattern for NEET (UG) 2021 is yet to be announced. However, in view of the reduction of the syllabus by some boards across the country, the NEET (UG) 2021 question paper will also have options on the lines of JEE (Main),” an official statement from the ministry read.

Last month, a high-level meeting chaired by the Minister of Education, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank had said that the “NTA will come out with the syllabus for competitive examinations after assessment of the existing scenario in various boards”. The NTA then had decided against the reduction of the syllabus of competitive exams and instead announced more internal choice. Not only the number of attempts for JEE Main have been doubled but also there have been internal choices. The same is expected for NEET as well. Being a pen-and-paper exam as well as having a large number of candidates appearing for the exam on one given day, there are more challenges of conducting NEET in a pandemic as compared to JEE Main.

For NEET, it was reported that the NTA had written to the Ministry of Health and asked if the same can be conducted twice. Last year too, after the apex court’s order, NTA had to hold NEET twice. The officials, however, denied giving any confirmation on this. The exam is usually held in May and students are eagerly awaiting a notification and some clarity.

From 2020 onwards, in NEET counselling five extra seats are reserved for children of Kashmiri migrants as well as Kashmiri pandits or Hindu families who are living in the Valley will get concessions in college admissions. Students will get relaxation in cut-off up to 10 per cent as well as the number of seats will be increased up to 5 per cent in each course for them.Further, the government had also approved to reserve five MBBS seats under the central pool for children of Covid warriors, introducing a new category called ‘wards of Covid warriors’ for the academic year 2020-21.

Republic Day 2021: History, importance and interesting facts

Republic Day 2021: India will be celebrating its 72nd Republic Day this year

Republic Day 2021: Republic Day is celebrated every year in India on January 26 to commemorate the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect, in the year 1950, and the country became a republic.

India became independent on August 15, 1947 — but it was not a date that India had chosen for itself, rather it was thrust upon by Lord Louis Mountbatten, as it marked the second anniversary of Japan’s submission to allied powers after World War II.

While India became independent from British Raj following the Indian Independence movement, it didn’t have a constitution of its own. Indian laws were based on a modified version of the British established, Government of India Act 1935.

Two weeks later, a Drafting Committee with Dr B R Ambedkar as chairman was appointed for drafting a permanent Indian Constitution. Although the Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, it came into force on January 26, 1950 – a day chosen by Indians for themselves for it held immense significance for the country.

The significance of January 26 is that on that day in 1929, the Indian National Congress made the well-known declaration of “Poorna Swaraj” or complete self-rule and Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the tricolour on the banks of the Ravi river. The date set for independence was January 26, 1930, and was celebrated as Poorna Swaraj day for the next 17 years.

Thus, when the Constitution of India was adopted on November 26, 1949, many considered it necessary to celebrate the document on a day associated with national pride, which was – January 26.

The Indian Republic Day is celebrated all across India with lots of patriotism and fervour. At Rajpath, in Delhi, magnificent parades by regiments of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, police, and paramilitary forces are witnessed. India’s defence prowess is on display too, with the latest missiles, aircraft, and weapon systems. Beautiful tableaus, representing the uniqueness of all the states of India are also showcased during the parade. The celebration usually ends with numerous air shows and flypasts by the Indian Forces.

It is a day when every community comes together and celebrates leaving past all their differences. India will be celebrating its 72nd Republic Day this year.
