Now, internet at the speed of light

Now, internet at the speed of light

Li-Fi, a superfast new form of wireless communication, could be 100 times faster than W-Fi

The last time you switched your torch on and off, it was probably a playful mimicry of Morse. Very soon, however, you might be doing it for some serious message transmission — and that could be 100 times faster than average Wi-Fi.

Scientists have finally introduced Li-Fi, a superfast new form of wireless communication for computers, outside of labs. An Estonian start-up, Velmenni, successfully implemented this technology in its offices.

According to reports in the Sydney Morning Herald, Li-Fi, which rapidly transmits data using flickering LED light fields between 400 and 800 terahertz, is nearly 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. The technology employed is known as Visible Light Communication (VLC), and is like an advanced version of Morse-code. Like switching a torch on and off in a pattern to relay a message in Morse, LED lights flick on and off in VLC at such extreme speeds that it can be used to write and transmit things in binary code, says the report.

Sciencealert.com reported that scientists that the researchers at Velmenni tested the technology in offices and industrial environments in Tallinn, Estonia, reaching transmission speeds of one gigabits per second, 100 times faster than the current average Wi-Fi speeds. In lab conditions, the International Business Times (IBTimes UK) reported, the transmission speed recorded a jaw-dropping 224 gigabits per second.

“We are doing a few pilot projects within different industries where we can utilise the VLC technology,” IBTimes UK quoted Velmenni Chief Executive Deepak Solanki as saying. “Currently, we have designed a smart lighting solution for an industrial environment where the data communication is done through light. We are also doing a pilot project with a private client where we are setting up a Li-Fi network to access the internet in their office space.”

So what are we basically looking at? Nothing is currently imaginable. Movie downloads, for one, would not be the same as before. Oh wait! Internet would not be the same as before. In fact, more efficient communication systems can be developed.

Before Li-Fi becomes available for mass use, however, devices have to be developed so that they are compatible with the technology and the speed. “It is very difficult to create a whole new infrastructure for Li-Fi, so somehow we need to integrate our system with the current system,” Solanki was quoted as saying in the IBTimes UK report.

5 WAYS TO Efficiently Work Part Time

5 WAYS TO Efficiently Work Part Time

Part-time work and workfrom-home policies are fast gaining acceptance in the corporate world. While some organisations are adopting them to help employees achieve work-life balance, others are considering them as measures to beat traffic woes, pollution and stress. ET's Prachi Verma Dadhwal share's experts' views on how to work part time efficiently.

1 Prioritise

Before opting for a part-time work model, one needs to set priorities in an order that is both aligned to the organisation's interest and yours. Your organisation should be aware of your decision to work part time, the arrangement for part-time work and its duration. “It is imperative that both you and your organisation have your expectations from each other clearly chalked out,“ says Swapnil Kamat, founder & CEO of Work Better Training. Harsh Lambah, country manager of Regus India, says it is best to enlist the support of another work partner, if necessary.

2 Be Disciplined to Deliver

Unless you are disciplined, the part-time or work-from-home will NOT work for you. While working, be sure you only do one thing at a time.Else, this would mess up your work as well as personal commitments.“Using a disciplined work style will allow you to complete your assignment in a focused and timely manner. It's tough while working parttime, and those who are disciplined can deliver on a regular basis,“ says Lambah. Kamat says, “The line between your work and personal hours should not blur and eat into the other regularly.“

3 Workspace at Home

You must have space at home that helps you divide home from work. This workspace at home should be close to what you have at office. This space at home should be devoid of any distractions, like music and television. “Given that most Indian homes don't have that luxury of space, it makes more sense to opt for a business centre or co-working space. It will reduce distractions that you'll have to deal with at home,“ says Lambah.

4 Do not Compromise on Work

“Remember when you work part time, it is only your physical presence from your workplace that has changed and gone down in terms of number of hours,“ says Kamat. The amount of work you are expected to do remains the same.

5 Make the Best of Technology

While working part time, technology like smartphone, video conferencing and emails should be exploited well. One can work from anywhere and anytime and yet be connected to his office and peer group. “Smartphone apps and other mobile devices are best while working on the move and navigating a hectic work schedule,“ says Lambah. “Silence the critics by showing them that irrespective of where you work from, and how many hours you clock in during the week, your work does not suffer and your productivity remains good,“ says Kamat.

I&B Ministry frames New Business Policy for Publications Division

I&B Ministry frames New Business Policy for Publications Division
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has framed a new business policy for Publications Division with the objective to streamline business practices in line with the contemporary trends prevailing in publications industry.

Highlights of the Policy

·         One of the key highlight of the policy includes promoting online readership by pricing the digital version of the publication at 75% the price of printed version.
·         This would ensure that 25% discount is passed on to the readers.
·         The policy acknowledges the growing prospects of e-commerce in the publications domain and promotes sale of e- books of the division through online platforms. The marketing tie-up with such e-commerce platforms would ensure better visibility and accessibility of its publications.
·         The policy stipulates that revenue earned from online sales of digital version of books would be shared in the ratio of 70:30 between Publications Division and e-commerce platform respectively.
·         It mentions that performance review of e-commerce platforms would also be done after two years for any further action.
·         The policy has also rationalized the pricing mechanism of key journals/magazines based on a formula incorporating production costs and discounts.

The policy framework focuses on the participation of critical stakeholders like Agents, Distributors and Institutions making bulk purchase through discount slabs, Credit & Exchange facility. It provides different discount slabs for Books & Journals/Employment News based on the monetary limit of the order and the number of copies respectively. National level book publishing organizations like National Book Trust interested in selling the publications of the Division would be covered under the agent’s discount rate of 45%.

The policy permits credit facility to the agents proportionate to their Earnest Money Deposit with sixty days of credit which could be enhanced against suitable Fixed Deposit. The exchange facility to the Agents would be allowed within 60 days of billing up to 10% of the gross value of the publications purchased in a year. However, this facility would be provided only two times in a calendar year and the exchange would not be applicable for the annual reference book India/Bharat. The policy has come into effect retrospectively from 31st Dec, 2015.
