Education dept plans board exams for Class 5, Class 8
MUMBAI: The state government is mulling over introducing common exams at Class 5 and Class 8 across schools. Since the Right to Education (RTE) act has implemented a no-detention policy till Class 8, it has been proposed by a member of parliament that these exams could be used as a tool to measure the learning levels of the students.
A proposal for introducing these exams has been tabled before Fauziya Khan, minister of state for school education and sports. “It is important to identify and increase the learning levels of students. For this, a formal assessment is needed that can test how much the students have actually learnt,” said Khan.
However, the proposal stated that this pattern is not being implemented properly in state board schools. “The CCE pattern requires teachers to document the development of students, but in reality teachers are taking short cuts and not documenting the students properly,” said a senior education official from the school education department. On the other hand, educationists said that holding such exams will go against the spirit of CCE and RTE. “Holding common exams for students will put pressure on them and lead to an exam-oriented approach in schools, which is opposite to what RTE stipulates,” said Arundhati Chavan, principal of Swayyam Siddhi College of Education, Kalyan.
Farida Lambay, founder of Pratham said that informal assessments in schools could be the answer to judge the learning levels. “Tests are required to track where the child stands, but this could be done in other ways instead of holding board exams for them,” said Lambay.
