Constitution day or Samvidahan Diwas is celebrated on November 26 every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India.

The Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India on 26 November 1949 and it was legally enforced on January 26, 1950. Almost 65 years later, the government of India declared 26 November as Constitution Day on 19 November 2015 by a gazette notification.

Before its completion on 26th November 1949, the Constitution underwent more than 2,000 amendments and came into being after meetings that were held for 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days. Artists from Shantiniketan decorated every page of the Indian Constitution and the original copies were written in Hindi and English.

The Preamble of to the Indian Constitution reads: “WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens: JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation; IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION”
