The day intends to create awareness about the importance of literacy and the role it plays in the development of society. This year, International Literacy Day is stressing on learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the UN, the pandemic affected around 773 million non-literate young people and adults across the globe. The outbreak, that started in December 2019, has augmented the inequality in access to meaningful literacy learning opportunities. While on one side, governments of several countries failed to come up with a strategic approach for adult and youth learning, curtains were pulled on several literacy programmes amid the coronavirus outbreak.
